6 Tips for Choosing Oil Paintings for Your Home

Selecting art oil painting for your home can be an exciting adventure. The interior space of your home and walls is the best way to express to your guest who you really are. To make things easier for you, here are some tips to get you started. ​

1. Which wall? 

Select the most important and visible walls in your home. It could be the wall above your sofa or dining wall. The oil painting that you are planning to hang onto your wall will attract attention so it is important that you give it room to shine. The wall is often one of the first areas noticed in a room.

2. Buy Art that You Love. 
​

Let's be honest be here, there is no right or wrong in choosing the paintings for your home. You like what you like. It should be something you will enjoy having in your home every day. While the rest of your home decor may need to obey a certain rules, you can go crazy with the paintings.  ​

​3. Pick the Right Size.
 ​

The size of the oil paintings will determine whether your house will look finished or incomplete. Measure your wall’s space dimensions and bring along the pictures of your wall. This way, when you are out looking for your oil paintings, you will have a much clearer idea of what space you have to work with and can imagine how the oil painting will look in your home.

4. What’s the Focal Point?

A room can have more than one area that draws your attention. Are you looking for an oil painting that is loud and outstanding, something that shouts 'YOU' or you looking for paintings that compliment your overall home decor? Make sure all the room’s design elements have some breathing space to avoid a cluttered look

​5.  Color is Important.
 ​

Think about the feel of a color before placing it on your wall. Pick oil paintings that contains some of your room design’s.  A piece with similar colors can work great as well. You can think about your furnishings, pillows, throws and curtains to create a palette of colors to look for in your oil paintings.

​6. Hang it right.
 ​

Make sure the painting is hung at the correct height or at eye level. You may want to try following the art gallery standard, which means the center of the painting should be about 60-66 inch at least from the floor.

I like how you said that there is no right or wrong in choosing the paintings for your home. It should be what you like and will enjoy having in your home every day. My fiance and I are planning to go around the town today to look for oil paintings for our new apartment. Thanks for these great tips for choosing oil paintings.

Thanks for helping understand that it's important to choose paintings with the same touches of colors as what you have in your room. This tip will really help me choose the right type of painting for my mother's living room. I plan to give her one for her birthday because she is a fan of art. She would usually go to museums to relax and appreciate art when she was younger.
